Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you don’t see your question here please call the gallery for assistance, 207-967-2803. Remember, there are no silly questions.

How much wind does it take to move them? What about high winds?

The slightest breeze will start the sculptures turning. Every sculpture is designed to withstand constant winds up to 70 mph and gusts up to 90 mph. When a big weather event is in the forecast, simply unlock the shaft & sculpture from the ground mount and safely store them away as part of your property preparation.

What about snow, ice, and saltwater?

With Lyman’s extensive experience in kinetic design and wind flow studies, each design has been created to endure a tremendous range of environmental conditions. The Copper Wind Sculptures are suited to snow, ice, and coastal living. They will even still turn when covered in snow and ice as long as there is wind. Saltwater or rime should be sprayed off with fresh water to prevent buildup.

How difficult is the installation?

Installation is as simple as 1, 2, 3! Every Wind Sculpture comes with instructions and diagrams for the installation of your sculpture. Please refer to the installation packet that was provided with your purchase.

What is copper patina?

At the studio, the artist applies an oxidizing wash to the copper to create a varied patina. Each sculpture will continue to weather over time and will gradually change in appearance.

Do the Wind Sculptures require any maintenance?

In each design, Lyman incorporates a high-quality, sealed, stainless steel bearing, which is incredibly resilient. These bearings require no oiling or any other maintenance.

Can my sculpture be made taller?

Yes! Extensions are available. Please call the gallery for more information.

How will it look like in my yard?

We have the ability to digitally place a wind sculpture or a series of Wind Sculptures into a photo provided by you. This is a great tool to help you decide on arrangements and sizes.
